Microsoft security breach allowed access to user email accounts
Some Microsoft-hosted e-mail accounts, such as those at Hotmail, were compromised after a hacker stole login credentials for a Microsoft employee. The breach allowed the intruder to obtain full e-mails from Microsoft consumer accounts.
In a statement provided to TechCrunch, Microsoft said, “A limited number of consumer accounts were impacted, and we have notified all impacted customers. Out of an abundance of caution, we also increased detection and monitoring to further protect affected accounts.”
Unlike regular email account hacking, there’s little you can do to prevent this type of intrusion. However, it would be a good idea to remove any sensitive information that might be stored in your account. If you need extra protection, consider setting up a free e-mail account with ProtonMail, where accounts are encrypted and cannot even be accessed by employees.
